Cassandra Cain/Batgirl/Black Bat
Batgirl 54 - where Cass Cain has to find a codeword hidden within a book to stop a rampaging killbot from destroying the library where the last copy of said book is being kept. Unfortunately, she has severe dyslexia and isn’t able to actually read said word, leading to a frustrated Oracle saying something she really shouldn’t…
They do make up later, but even though Barb offers to work out a learning program based around Cass’ problem, the issue is seemingly dropped due to the infamous Adam Beechen Robin story “Wanted”… which has been covered already by other people.
Considering my youngest sister was only recently diagnosed with dyslexia just as she was entering university, and had to deal with people telling her the reason she wasn’t doing well at school work was that she wasn’t trying hard enough… yeah, this comic makes me even more sad now. :(
She was perfect. Not ‘good’. Not ‘better than expected’. Perfect.
I would’ve surveyed the room before charging in. She didn’t have to. Her strange training enables her to… read opponents. Body language is a real language for her. Her only language. With one glance, she already knew what they’d just started to think about doing. The fight was over before her feet touched the ground. But that’s not what impressed me.
Those people were scum. Cold-blooded killers. They’d fired at women and children, killing dozens. Batgirl knew this. She also knew how I felt about it. How little I’d have minded any extra… zeal… on her part. But… there wasn’t any. At her speed it must’ve been difficult, but she did just enough to take them out. No more.
She was… it wouldn’t have looked this way to anyone else, mind you, but she was… Gentle. Even with them.
Perfect.
